Most Seats on a Plane? A380, 777 and A330 Records

A plane can have as many as 615 seats in SeatRecon's 1,100-configuration corpus. Compare 777 totals (212–472), the 459-seat A330, and 15 more type records.

How many seats can a plane have? Across SeatRecon's 1,100 configurations, the answer is 615 seats: Emirates' Airbus A380, across two full decks. Among single-deck jets, Air France's Boeing 777-300ER leads at 472; among all-economy wide-bodies, Cebu Pacific's Airbus A330-900 leads at 459. And a 777 — the biggest twinjet flying — can have anywhere from 212 to 472 seats depending on who operates it.

Those three numbers measure different things. The A380's 615 is big: two floors of aircraft. The 777's 472 and the A330's 459 are tight: a fixed single-deck tube, filled to the type's corpus maximum. This post is about the second kind of number — how high seat counts go for each aircraft type, who sits at each ceiling, and how far the same type stretches between its densest and roomiest versions.

Study scope: a SeatRecon corpus snapshot from July 20, 2026 — 1,100 configuration pages across 225 operators. We count configuration pages, not individual aircraft, and "seats" means the published total for that configuration. "Densest" here means the highest published seat total: the catalog does not measure seats per square metre, pitch, width or legroom, so comparisons across aircraft types are capacity comparisons only. Counts include active layouts plus retrofit-source (phasing out) and retrofit-target (phasing in) pages.

How many seats on a 777? Anywhere from 212 to 472

The 777 is the clearest family-level example in the corpus: 79 configurations across five variants (777-200, -200ER, -200LR, -300 and -300ER) and 34 operators span 212 to 472 seats. That 260-seat spread is the widest of any wide-body type we hold. Every row below is a real configuration — click any airline to open the map behind the number.

Read the seat column top to bottom and you are watching the same fuselage get reallocated. Air France's 472 still carries business, premium economy and extra-legroom cabins — it just keeps every one of them lean and lets 410 economy seats do the heavy lifting. At the other end, ANA's 212-seat 777-300ER devotes 96 seats to first, business and premium economy, leaving 116 economy seats in a fuselage length that Air France fills with 410. Same variant, 260 seats of difference.

Jin Air's 777-200ER deserves its own line: at 393 seats, it is the only all-economy 777 in the corpus — no business, no premium, nothing but economy rows — making it the highest-seat-count all-economy 777. Air France still holds the overall 777 maximum at 472, on the longer -300ER.

The table also shows how little "777" on a booking actually tells you. It could mean Emirates' 421-seat two-class layout, Saudia's 405 with just 12 business seats up front, or British Airways' first-and-business-heavy 256-seat cabin — and the ticket reads identically.

The seat-count leaderboard, type by type

Zoom out from the 777 and the same pattern repeats across every family: each type has a "how many seats can it hold" ceiling in the corpus, and a specific operator sitting on it. Here is the highest-seat-count configuration we hold for the major types.

Where a record is shared, the table says so: the 737-800's 189 is held by 34 layouts across 33 operators (we compared 96 of its configurations in our first post; the family has since grown to 122); the A320ceo's 186 by twelve operators from AirAsia to Vueling; and the 787-9 and 787-8 records are each shared with Scoot.

A few rows deserve calling out because they surprise people.

The highest-capacity narrow-body in the corpus is not a 737 — it is Frontier's 243-seat A321neo, a single-aisle jet carrying more passengers than some twin-aisle configurations in the same corpus. And within the 737 family, the record holder is not the newest variant: Thai Lion Air's 220-seat 737-900ER, all economy, out-seats every MAX we hold. The MAX 8-200's own ceiling is Ryanair's 197; Allegiant Air flies the same variant at 190 with a 43-seat extra-legroom block, and the classic 737-800 tops out at 189.

At the small end, the highest-count turboprop is SpiceJet's 90-seat Q400 — most Q400 operators in the corpus fly it in the 70s — and the regional-jet record is 136 seats on the Embraer E195-E2, shared four ways by Airlink, Azul, KLM and Luxair. (We count the E-jets, CRJs and their kin as regional jets; the Airbus A220, which reaches 149 seats in the corpus, is a mainline narrowbody and sits outside that category.)

The spread: same wide-body, two different aircraft

The seat-count ceiling is only half the story. The more useful number, if you are the one sitting in it, is the spread — the gap between the densest and the roomiest version of a single type. That gap is what makes the aircraft name on your ticket almost meaningless.

That 787-9 pair is the whole thesis in miniature: ANA and JAL hold the identical aircraft type and land 180 seats apart — ANA's densest 787-9 is 28 business plus 347 economy, JAL's roomiest is 44 business, 35 premium economy and 116 economy. Neither is "the 787-9 cabin." There is no such thing.

What the cabin mixes actually show

The catalog does not record airline strategy, but the association in the data is stark: ten of the 18 type records above are single-class, all-economy layouts — the A330-900, A330-300, A321neo, 737-900ER, MAX 8-200, A320neo, 737-800, A320ceo, E195-E2 and Q400. The most direct route to a type's seat-count ceiling, on the evidence of this corpus, is to fit no premium cabin at all. Every remaining record-holder keeps its premium cabins small relative to the type's roomiest layouts — compare Air France's 14 business seats at 472 total with ANA's 96 premium seats at 212. The catalog shows that association; it does not establish why any airline chose its layout, and we will not invent reasons here. The passenger takeaway: the type badge is the shell, not the cabin

If you take one practical thing from all of this, it is that the aircraft type on your booking is the outside of the plane, and the seat count is the inside — and they are only loosely related. A "777" can be a 212-seat premium-heavy cabin or a 393-seat all-economy one. A "737" can be 151 seats or 220. The number that actually predicts your flight is the configuration's seat total and cabin mix, and that is exactly what a per-airline, per-configuration seat map pins down. (Our comparison of 96 Boeing 737-800 configurations worked the same problem from the other direction: one airframe, 96 different cabins.)

Two moves get you from a vague type badge to the real map:

  • Start from the airline, not the aircraft. Open the operating carrier's hub — Emirates, Frontier, Cebu Pacific, Jin Air — and you will see every configuration that airline actually flies, not a generic diagram.
  • Match the seat count. When an airline runs more than one layout of a type, we split them into separate, clearly labeled maps by total seats or cabin version, so you can line the number on your boarding pass or the airline's app up with the exact map. A 391-seat A350 and a 161-seat A350 are different aircraft to spend twelve hours in, and they get different pages.

How we know

Every number here was computed from the SeatRecon corpus with a committed script (scripts/analyze-density.mjs) that reads the same catalog the seat-map pages serve, and asserts every record, tie and spread in this post against the full corpus — no seat counts were taken from, or checked against, any other seat-map provider. Each configuration page carries its own provenance: whether the layout was built from a published airline seat map, reconstructed in part, or derived from a verified seat count where no public map exists, with derivations clearly badged rather than dressed up as citations. The direct answers, one more time: 615 seats overall, 472 on a 777, and 459 on an all-economy wide-body. For a passenger, though, the useful number is none of these — it is the total attached to the operating airline's exact configuration. Start from the full airline directory, pick the carrier you are actually flying, and match your seat count. Same badge on the fuselage, wildly different cabin inside it.
